Overview of the History of the Japanese Language School
The current JCAM Japanese Language School was originally established in 1987 as the Japanese language school of MJCCC (the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre), the predecessor of JCAM, offering classes for both adults and children. After MJCCC moved to its current location at 180 McPhillips Street in 1993, the adult classes expanded to five levels, ranging from beginner to advanced, and a heritage language program based on the Japanese national curriculum was introduced for children. With special approval from the Manitoba provincial government, a high school credit program was also added.
In 2013, MJCCC and MJCCA (the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association) amalgamated to form JCAM. Although the number of classes decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, enrolment has since increased, and the school now offers Japanese language classes for a wide range of age groups. In recent years , new programs have been introduced, including Nihongo Explorers, which is taught in English and designed for children learning Japanese for the first time, including third- and fourth-generation Japanese Canadians, and a Conversation Club, which provides adult learners who have completed beginner-level studies with ongoing opportunities to practice speaking Japanese. These additions have expanded opportunities for more people to learn Japanese.
The Centre offers Japanese Language Classes for all ages, starting with nursery right up to adult. If you want to learn Japanese, introduce your child to the Japanese heritage, maintain your Japanese Language skills or just have an interest in the Japanese culture, these language classes are for you!
For high school students Grades 9 - 12 we offer 3 to 4 levels of Japanese instruction, each fully eligible for a Manitoba Department of Education Language Credit, if they pass their final exam.
